Mark Penner - Vancouver, Canada
Name: Mark Penner aka Cyclist
Location: Vancouver, Canada
Occupation: DJ / Musician / Producer / Recording Engineer
I've spent most of my life making dance music, mostly in dance funk bands but more recently under the producer name Cyclist. I also have a background in recording engineering and have produced albums for soul, hip hop and rock acts. However my first love is disco!
Some tracks that I like to play out and seem to really work here are:
Melee - Spaced Out Oh Yeah
Poolside - Do You Believe
Say Yes To Another Excess Success - Say Yes To Another Excess Success
Jonas Rathsman - Love is My Middle Name
Debonair - Why?
Greenskeepers - Beat The Clock
In Flagranti - Hallow Discourse (Pete Herbert Edit)
International DJ Scene:
I recently moved to Vancouver from Winnipeg and I'm like a kid in a candy store... Vancouver has someone great playing every weekend! So far I've seen: Todd Terje, The C90s, Jeremy Glenn, Treasure Fingers, Poolside, Lifelike, Fred Falke and most recently Metro Area.
Todd Terje and Metro area are probably tied for my favourite sets thus far… I love DJs that are able to find amazing lost disco and house tracks that I've never heard before.
DJs I've unfortunately missed are: Eli Escobar, Crazy P, Classixx and Derrick May.
Vancouver has a slew of fantastically talented DJs.
Pat Lok: Veteran house DJ turned producer who's been showing me the ropes in Vancouver. He's about to release an EP called "No Shame" on the French label On The Fruit.
Pat Lok - No Shame by On The Fruit Records
Laberge: I just got to play with him last week… really great disco/house DJ/producer. He has some releases on Solid Bump Records and keeps his soundcloud page fresh with free downloads.
Neighbour: One of the founders of Homebreakin' Record (who recently released an EP of mine). Matt's a very prolific house/funk/disco producer and a talented musician as well.
Abasi: 1/3 of the promotion crew for Intimate Productions who are responsible for some of the best parties in Vancouver. He's also a seasoned DJ who spins all vinyl sets of the best disco, house and techno underground classics.
I am a resident DJ for a monthly party call Daft Funk with Pat Lok. We've just got it off the ground and it's happening the last thursday of every month at The Electric Owl (a really great new venue here) - The next one in on Nov.24th. We usually start off with underground boogie, funk and disco and work up to new and old school house.
I've also been working hard on music. I've got a remix for Gigamesh coming out very soon and my next EP on Homebreakin' should be out in early 2012. Other than that I keep busy digging for records and occasionally contributing to the blog Manalogue.com.
I just picked up a vinyl copy of "Generate Power" by Photon, Inc feat. Paula Brion. 1991 baby! Love that sax sample!
