Steve Bray - Thailand
Name: Steve Bray
Location: Koh Samui, Thailand
Occupation: DJ / Percussionist / Promoter
Tracks that I’m really digging at the moment:
Lee Foss – Brooklyn In The House. This track has definitely got the sex appeal.
Bonar Bradberry – On The Bounce
Aeroplane – We Can’t Fly (Joaklim remix)
Groove Armada – There Was Rhythm
Razor N Tape – So Tight/Feel The Rhythm
Recently we’ve seen quite a diverse platform of artists; Layo & Bushwacka! hit Bangkok and Mr Buswacka! came to play Samui Albeit. He played Sound club mid-week to a packed house and took the tore the place apart. Not heard such underground vibes for a while and the crowd really went with it. Very encouraging in these times when popularized house music is lurking around most corners!
I got a chance to hook up with Steven Lee (formally Lee Cabrera) after his set on the rooftop at Famous in Phuket. He was supposed to play Bliss Beach club but a huge tropical storm put a stop to that. This gave us ample time to savour Pepe’s imported beers whilst managing to extract a few words from this extremely busy DJ/producer: Steven has always several projects on the go including recording with Seal at Lenney Kravitz’ studio, wow!
Other artists that have graced our shores so far this year: Shapeshifters, Jazzy Jeff, Onsulade, Leeroy Thornhill and Darren Emmerson to name a few.
I’ve just received a text message from a friend gloating at the sounds of Groove Armada at LED in Bangkok. I called him the next day for a report: Amazing! Packed to full capacity on a Thursday night at 1100 BAHT (24 quid) per ticket. Fair play!!
Nikki Beach has just celebrated its 3rd birthday on the island. There are rumours of yet another beach club to hit Koh Samui.
Talking of beach clubs. We presented a great night last month with LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad. It really does take an effort rounding up all the D&B heads on the island but we pulled it off and the night went like clockwork. I got asked to warm up just one day before and had my D&B debut. All was going well until some idiot tried to drag LTJ Bukem in to the pool ending with me and my iPhone in the wash. Arrrrghhhh!
Jon Jak from Lunar Events staged a very cool boat party on an old Chinese war junk, taking in a tour of surrounding islands whilst listening to some fine music from Kris Oliver and JJ himself. Top tunes from the day: Somehow by Andy Ash and Ghost Bawz by Japer James.
Jay Sebag Vs Claptone – Like That Cream (Sky n Sugarstarr booty) Just been sent this track, great deep vibes, fantastic vocals with a nice layer of percussion. Also check out their new A cappella and tools pack, well worth having in your box!
Baker Brothers - Time To Testify. One of the most prolific funk & soul bands of the modern era.
Especially liking the remix of Snap Back – courtesy of CMC & Silenta. Check BBs out live if you can with the full brass section.
I usually get to play percussion with them when I’m back in the UK - it’s a real blast!
TJR – Funky Vodka really shakes up the dancefloor with something a little different. Some JB and ska influence creeping in.
What’s new at the moment? Kris Oliver & myself have just started a residency at Starwood’s Le Meridien in Koh Samui. Poolside vibes from 7 – 10pm every night apart from Wednesday.
Top tunes round the pool this month:
Idjut Boys – One For Kenny
Soultastic - Waves Of Luv (Radio Mix)
Parties – Looking at doing a series of parties starting with The Q Bar, Koh Samui. Not played here for years but it’s under new management now so fingers crossed for lots more parties. Please see the flyer for details.
Love the vibe with this track, got a rhythmic tribal quality to it whilst sustaining a melodic vibe. Works well throwing some extra percussion over this.
Seamus Haji & Cevin Fisher – I Love The Music (Manuel De La Mare & Alex Kenji Remix). Works very well on the dance floor, full of energy and a great piano riff.
