Biography: Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, and currently residing in London, England, John Norman is pushing techno sounds to new places. His sound has been refined over many years of avid pursuit of that which is driving yet laid back, dull yet minimalist. The result is a sound unlike any other, filling dance floors around the world.
His quickly growing arsenal of original tracks and remixes now include releases with 7 Stars Music, TechnoMafia Recordings, 4PlayTrax, UNIT! Records, OneWay, and EUN Records. Notable gigs include Ministry of Sound and Gigalum (London), Toi Bar and The Purple Room (Toronto), MEME Festival (Winnipeg), Y Afterhours (Edmonton) and radio features in UK, Brazil, Croatia, Bulgaria, Chile and across North America. He was one of the final featured guests on DJ Preach's Transatlantic Radio show who stated that John's mix of tech house will take you to a place you've never been before. Now in its second year, his montly mix series 'Original Language Global Session' continues to feature some of the finest house and techno available, and can be found in the iTunes podcast section.
You can expect John to push his productions and DJ sets to new heights as his obsession with sound continues, taking influences not only from electronic music history but also from the everyday and spreading his brand of music over the world.
From my perspective, these are just a handful of tracks that give a sense of London techno sound at this time.
Shadow Child - String Thing (Original Mix) - Dirtybird
Justin Martin - Don't Go (DJ Version) - Dirtybird
Martijn - Acid (Original Mix) - Darkstar
Rob Nutek - Cynna (Stanny Abram Remix) - 7 Stars Music
International DJ Scene:
The international DJs are an option nearly every night of the week in London. That said, there have been some standouts for me recently. John Digweed's Bedrock night at XOYO was outstanding - I had seen him in a smaller venue in Canada and it was pretty solid, but seeing him in London was absolutely outstanding. Other great nights have included Monoloc and Chris Liebing at the CLR Warehouse Party, Dave Spoon at the premiere party for Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy film, and Alan Fitzpatrick and Joel Mull at the Drumcode 15 years.
I am currently soaking up the London scene for my remaining time here before heading back to Canada. Bloc Festival which will be at the London Pleasure Gardens July 6th and 7th is set to be the ultimate festival experience for techno lovers in the city. The line-up includes Orbital, Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Ricardo Villabos, Jamie Jones, Carl Craig, Art Department, Perc along side many other quality acts. Set in East London near City Airport, the festival has a gritty urban feel with a backdrop of an old flour mill in the industrial East-End. Music will run from 2pm to 6am - the prospect of urban outdoor partying into the wee hours is very exciting.
I'm really loving 2012 so far! My track 'London Town' on 7 Stars Music was my first break into the Beatport Top 100 with remixes by Joe Silva and Figu Ds. I'm pleased to announce another project with Joe Silva - his track 'Spam' with me on the remix has been picked up by Techno Mafia Recordings and is due to be released on June 28th. It has been getting some excellent early support and will hopefully be successful in the clubs and charts too. I've also got a few more gig announcements coming soon for later in the year including a major festival which is very exciting!
Funnily enough I was just doing an interview for Modulate FM who asked for 3 tracks that never leave my side - 2 out of 3 were Strictly Rhythm!
Both of these are tracks that I always know I can go to for injecting the perfect energy into a dancefloor.
