Steve Bray - Koh Samui, Thailand
Name: Steve Bray
Occupation: DJ / Percussionist / Promoter
I DJ / play percussion around the islands including Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Phuket and the mainland. Occasionally I’ll put on my own party - The Movement Party - which, as its name suggests, moves to various venues across Thailand.
I first started out in Bournemouth 1997 promoting a monthly party called Maison with the co-founder Cliff Lay and in 1995 opted for a staple diet of coconut and rice so moved to the island of Koh Samui.
What's Your Strictly Rhythm?
Tracks that are working on the dance floor in The Land of Smiles:
Mark Knight – Devil Walking (especially works in Thailand for obvious reasons!)
Joris Voorn – Sweep the Floor
Ghosts Of Venice feat. Errol Reid - Without You (Girls just seem to run to the dance floor for this one)
The Dancefloor Outlaws – Disco Message (Great little re-mix of the legendary Grandmaster Flash’s ‘The Message’)
Ashley Beedle’s edit of Guaguanco by The Mighty Dub Katz's – Lots of rich latin flavours
Crazy P’s instrumental of Fred Everything’s ‘Friday’ – Great to play early doors
Ben Westbeech – Falling (Original Mix)
Something Good – Ride
Soul Purpose – Breakdown For Love
Jay Vegas – Way Back
ATFC – Dazzle
International DJ Scene:
Over the past year we’ve seen: LTJ Bukem, Norman Jay, Seb Fontaine, Louis Vegas, Jon Carter, Riva Star, Sandy Riviera and many more.
I love the label. Now that I’m not playing vinyl I do miss those little red bricks sticking out of my case! Always great to hear new tracks coming through. Recently been playing tracks from Steal Vybe - Music 4 The World (Atmosphere To The Cosmos Mix) and remixes like Ultra Nate – Free (Bob Sinclar) nice to hear this again & ATFC’s I Called You.
Latest album – Avicii Presents Strictly Miami
Favourite tracks: Jose Nunez - Life Goes On and Dennis Ferrer’s Hey Hey (been playing this a lot in 2010). Also Bromance - Tim Berg, works great with live percussion.
There’s always lots of parties, day and night, from ram shackled old bars on to hip happening beach clubs such as the world famous Nikki Beach. Venues to choose from in the daytime depends on the day of the week.
Weekly beach parties:
Sunergy at The Slope Bar on Tuesdays has a rotation of some of the islands coolest DJs and on Wednesday you should check out Ark Bar at Chaweng Beach which has been there forever.
Soulful Saturdays at Beach Republic is situated in Lamai. Open from 1 pm until 6pm. They have great food and 2 huge pools.
Sundays – Nikki Beach with residents Andy Vier and DJ Antonio. This is the place where you’re encouraged to buy Magnums of champagne like they’re bottles of Tizer and spray yourselves senseless like you’ve just got a pole position at Monaco.
Other regular events are The Black Moon & Escape Party currently held at Sound Club while The Lakeside is being renovated with resident DJ A and guests which usually gets going around 1am and goes on ‘til dawn breaks.
Recently at Sound Club we’ve seen Jon Cater, Seb Fontaine and Sandy Riviera play the main arena. Phil Drummond has recently taken up residency on the island and is usually not too far from the venue.
Other DJs that have come through Thailand recently include; LTJ Bukem with MC Conrad, Riva Star, Leeroy Thornhill, Louis Vegas, Graham Gold and Onsulade to name a few.
I spoke with LTJ Bukem recently about why Samui is a regular favourite and he informed me that as well as having a number of gigs in Thailand it’s a great springboard to places in South East Asia such as Singapore, Hong Kong & Kuala Lumpur as well as being only a 9 hour flight to Australia and New Zealand.
The legendary Full Moon Party is held on our sister island of Koh Phangan (40 minute boat ride) on a 1km stretch of beach. Be sure to get there a few days early as all the best accommodation will be gone! If you want an afterparty - visit the Back Yard for a more chilled affair.
You can find me at Saturday Social @ Anantara Lawana, Koh Samu on the 2nd July
