Zulu's At Work - Johannesburg (Soweto), South Africa
Name: Zulu's At Work
Location: Johannesburg (Soweto), South Africa
Occupation: Producer, Remixer, DJ
What's your summer hit 2012 so far?
It has to be DJ Christos - Weekend Special (Nastee Nev 0808 Sweetsoul Remix). I came across this banger earlier this year and we’ve recently started playing it again - it makes crowds go crazy. With the legendary lyrics of Brenda Fassie, Nastee Nev did a marvellous job on this remix and it's just one of those tracks you can’t get over.
What events/ festivals have you been to this summer?
We'll be going to the Warm Up event to check out Jazzman and his deep German sounds. He's just one of those DJs that gives you a precise and accurate definition of the term DEEP HOUSE. Looking forward to attending that one!
Highlights of the year:
The CTEMF was one event we shouldn’t have missed but traveling the distance was too expensive. Mi Casa scooping three awards out of five nominations with their debut album is also worth mentioning. It shows that recognition will always be given when one works their butt off. The debut album release by Sai & Ribatone titled Here and Now under Soulistic Music was long awaited by many fans of the duo. It finally came out with hot tunes like their broken remix of Sunday Showers, Sai & Ribatone ft Tshepo & Blackcoffee - Been Around (The World), Sai & Ribatone - This Love and more. Hopefully they'll be scooping more awards soon.
Tracks that are currently rocking the dance floors:
Namy - There She Stands (Frankie Feliciano Remix). A massive radio hit.
Donald - Denial. Another hot single from this guy. He's new to the scene but you couldn't tell!
Liquideep - Alone (Zakes Bantwini Remix). A complete surprise from South Africa's James Brown. A definite hit.
Ocean Deep feat. MJ White - One Love (Sandiso Perspective Mix). Not yet known by many but a definite club hitter.
BSC feat. Jessi Colasante - What You Do To Me (Boddhi Satva). Everywhere we go, this track is impossible to avoid. Big up to Boddhi.
International DJ Scene:
The Warm Up, an event powered by Funktion-One, takes place once a month. This is the eleventh edition of the event and it was held at Carfax on August 5th with usual suspects 2lani The Warrior, Phat Jack, Chris Keys, Kriger and special international guest DJ Jazzman from Germany. The man behind the highly rated Deep Inspiration Show will blazed the South African scene for the first time. We were at the event and we'll include pictures in our next article.
The whole country was blessed with the presence of Sahin Meyer, Andre Lodemann and Tricksi who were blazing the dance floors and according to reviews, they did their thing. We definitely won't miss them the next time they come to South Africa. The tour started in Johannesburg at the Cru Culture Club where South African talents like 2lani The Warrior, Whitney D'vine and others started up the event. The crowd at Chukkachirri in Cape Town were lazed with some groovy deep tech sounds and at the Vodacom pre-party at Empyre in Durban. A mixed crowd got to experience Andre and Sahin live before the official Vodacom party where Black Coffee recorded his live DVD titled Africa Rising.
Durban recently hosted the SAMC - South Africa Music Conference, a week long workshop powered by DJU. Ths year's edition included international acts such as Byron Stingly, a legend in the house scene as well as Rocco, Ralf Gum and more. The workshop basically gets the professionals and talents in one room and information is shared so those aspiring composer/DJs get to learn how things are done, how the industry works and stuff like that. As Strictly Scene ambassadors we just couldn't miss out on an occasion like that! Here's some pics:
The long wait for Black Coffee's Africa Rising live DVD recorded at Moses Mabhida is finally coming to an end. It's a DVD of live performances of Black Coffee's hot singles with artists like Zakes Bantwini, Soulstar and Busi, Malehlokwa and more, accompanied by a 16 piece orchestra. It was a first for a South African DJ but who could have done it better than the master himself.
Liquideep decided to milk some more money from their award winning album by releasing an electronic album under with remixes by producers like Zakes Bantwini. It's something that's worth the buy and the listen.
Seamus Haji & Cevin Fisher - I Love Ibiza
Haji and Fisher hit back with this great release under Strictly Rhythm. An eccentric track that takes you to the Latin world with its jazzy classic feel, it may be all you'll ever need for this summer. Not to be biased but this is not for everyone of course but all Haji & Fisher fans will love this one, probably already do.
