Xtra Life Records Competition Winner - Tony Romera
We sat down with the Xtra Life competition winner Tony Romera to discuss his music, career and future.
Hi Tony, congratulations on winning the Xtra Life track competiton. How does it feel to be selected out of all the people that entered?
Hi, thank you! I was so excited because Tristan has been a role model for me since I started. It was an honor to win this competition.
What was your first reaction when you found out?
My first reaction was to jump around in the street and scream haha
Tell us a little bit about yourself. What's your background?
I started producing and DJing 5 years ago. I have released a lot of tracks on 17:44 Records and on some other labels as well. I received support from great artists such as Tiesto, Chuckie, Gregori Klosman, Fatboy Slim, Roger Sanchez, Fedde Le Grand, Ron Carroll, DBN, Tristan Garner etc. They've been my role models for a long time so they are what motivates me to progress and get better without giving up and getting discouraged.
How would you describe your sound?
I don't know how to describe my sound. I think sometimes my sound is a little calm mixed with some nostalgia and memories from my past. Sometimes the sound is more aggressive because in the real life I can be a bit nervous (and a little mad haha). I'm trying to transcribe my feelings through my sound.
Many top DJs come from France. Is there something in the water that's growing talent? Do you think you can follow in their footsteps?
I really hope so. But I think it's really hard to follow in their footsteps, especially the biggest French DJs because they are really big and respected. If it happens one day, I'll be the happiest guy in the world!
Xtra Life Records is run by Tristan Garner. How has it been working with him?
Tristan is really cool. He's serious in his work while being able to have fun. I have the same vision regarding my work. Serious yet funm it's a real pleasure to work with Tristan.
How did you get into producing?
When I was really young I was listening to Daft Punk and I always wondered how they created their sound. Some years later my best friend spoke to me about producing because we liked to listen to electro house. That's when I discovered Joachim Garraud and his forum. That's where it all begun.
What's your creative process when making a track?
It's never the same. Sometimes I have an idea on a loop with a melody and then I work on the structure. Sometimes when I have some ideas on a type of sound I start with the structure and afterwards create the track, melody and mix all at once.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I'm always listening to old and new stuff. I always listen to some tracks before I begin to work on a new one.
What equipment/software do you use?
I'm using Logic Pro 9 on my Max Pro, with an Audiobox USB and Yamaha HS80 for the monitoring but I'm gonna change the gear really soon.
You're also a DJ. Do you prefer DJing or producing?
I love it when I'm in the DJ booth. I close my eyes, feel the power of the crowd and the music, and to quote some Swedish guys, leave the world behind. That's what I think about when I'm playing. When I'm at home producing it's the same sometimes. That's why I love both DJing and producing.
If you could DJ anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
If I got an opportunity I think it would be Tomorrowland Festival since I've been watching the live broadcasts and after movies for years and it's my ultimate dream. But if I could play anywhere in the world I wouldn't mind where I play, as long as people feel the music I'd be the happiest man in the world.
If you could choose one DJ, prioducer or an artist you'd like to collaborate with, who would it be and why?
WOW! That's a hard question. I think it would be Fedde Le Grand because I've always liked his productions. It's always different and brings something new to the table every time. When he's playing in clubs/festivals it's a monster.
What's the best advice you've been given?
2 years ago I met Tristan Garner at a pool party. He told me to switch to Logic Pro, not to imitate the Swedish sound and instead concentrate on making my own sound. He also said to try to make bangers and stay true to my own taste. The second best advice was given by Gregori Klosman. He told me to always try new sonorities.
What do you hope to achieve in the future?
I hope to play every weekend and to continue to receive support from my role models.
I'm really proud to have signed these 2 kids first! They are really talented and trust me you are going to hear a lot about them this year!
Well done guys, welcome to the XtraLife family.
