Label History / Biography

‘Recreational’ (rekre-ay-sha-nal) is an activity of leisure, leisure being discretionary time. The "need to do something for recreation" is an essential element of human biology and psychology. Recreational activities are often done for enjoyment or pleasure and are considered to be "fun". The term recreation implies participation to be healthy, refreshing mind and body.

‘Riot’ (rahy-uht) is a form of disorder characterized often by what is thought of as disorganized or unrelated groups simultaneously inspired by an intense rebellion to actions or laws set by a hierarchy. Riots are thought to be typically chaotic and exhibit herd behaviour, and usually generated by unrest. However, there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that riots are not irrational, herd-like behaviour, but follow social desires to break from the norm of rules currently in place.

A simple definition which we adopted as the ethos of the label and a description that really captures the sound of what we aim to deliver with Recreational Riot. Having had the luxury of the London club scene collectively for over 30 years we are continually immersed in all styles of music and the trends and fashions that go with them, when those styles collide and overlap, the genre definitions become blurred - that’s when we get excited, that is what London does. It’s this evolution of clubbing and music which attracts a broad audience that has seen ‘Dance’ music become ‘Electronic’ music, where Pop rubs shoulders with Dubstep and hip-hop is reborn as Grime riding rhythms of techno alongside the soul of future garage…

We have clear understanding of which producers are hot at club and destined to be at radio, separating those with hype and no substance from the future stars. The Music market is fast evolving both with its sounds and trends and Recreational Riot is firmly establishing the emerging.
